John F. Kennedy International Airport, often referred to as JFK, is one of the major airports serving New York City. It lays claim to being the sixth busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic in the world with over 59 million passengers passing through its terminals every year.
It wasn’t called John F. Kennedy International Airport until 1963 in honor of the recently assassinated president. It was renamed in December 1963 after Jacqueline Kennedy mentioned to the mayor of New York City, Robert F. Wagner, that her husband had never had an airport named after him. The mayor then decided to approach the Port Authority about changing the name of the airport to JFK International Airport with Mrs. Kennedy agreeing to lend her wholehearted support for the renaming.
